The formation and early history of the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Council of North America (ACNA) reflect a concerted effort by various regional alumni associations to establish a unified governing body. Here is an overview of ACNA’s history:
In early 1988, Edgar Ninofranco, the president of the Southern California Alumni Association, initiated discussions with Joey Makayan, the president of the East Coast Alumni Association, and Danny Nagrampa, the president of the Northern California Alumni Association. The purpose of these discussions was to explore the idea of creating an umbrella organization that would unify all Alpha Phi Omega alumni associations in North America.
These initial discussions led to the formation of an Ad Hoc Committee, which was tasked with laying the groundwork for the proposed umbrella organization. The committee set a target date of 1990 for the Inter-State Conference, during which further discussions and planning would take place.
The culmination of the idea of an Inter-State Conference occurred in 1990 when Northern California hosted the event on September 1 coinciding with an Annual Sportsfest between the Northern and Southern California Alumni Associations.
The conference was attended by official delegates and other members from each of the three Associations and was honored by Dr. Librado (Bado) I. Ureta, Ph.D., the Philippine Organizer and President Emeritus.
In this conference, the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Council of North America (ACNA) was formally established, marking a significant milestone in the organization and governance of Alpha Phi Omega alumni associations in North America. ACNA was founded with six charter members: Northern California, Southern California, East Coast, Midwest-Chicago, Houston, and Toronto.
As part of the establishment of ACNA, two separate bodies were created to facilitate the organization’s operations.
Constitutional Commission: This body was tasked with drafting the constitution and bylaws of ACNA. The establishment of clear governing documents was crucial for defining the structure, responsibilities, and operating procedures of the organization.
Ad Hoc Set of Officers: An Ad Hoc set of officers was elected to oversee the initial operations of ACNA. The Ad Hoc set of officers, headed by F. Thomas Ayo, was inducted by Dr. Librado (Bado) I. Ureta to serve a two-year term of office (1991- 1992).
The East Coast Alumni Association hosted the First Biennial Convention of the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Council of North America (ACNA). This convention was a significant event in the history of ACNA as it marked the formalization of the organization’s structure and governance. It represented a significant step forward in the development of ACNA as a unified governing body for Alpha Phi Omega alumni associations in North America. The convention was honored by the participation of Gerard Schroeder, the National President of Alpha Phi Omega USA.
Key highlights of the First Biennial Convention include:
Ratification of By-laws: At the convention, the newly drafted set of By-laws for ACNA was formally ratified by the six member-Associations.
Establishment of Guidelines: In addition to ratifying the By-laws, the convention also saw the establishment of more guidelines for future conventions and semi-annual council board meetings.
Election and Induction of ACNA Officers: The first set of ACNA Officers was elected to serve from 1993 to 1994. Following their election, these officers were subsequently inducted into office during a dinner-dance reception.
The early milestones and challenges faced by the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Council of North America (ACNA) reflect its growing stature as a unifying force within the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. These early experiences have not only shaped ACNA’s identity but have also provided a solid foundation for its continued growth and success. It remains dedicated to its mission of serving and empowering Alpha Phi Omega alumni associations across North America, while upholding the values and principles of the fraternity.
ACNA Expands It’s Membership: The expansion of the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Council of North America (ACNA) from its original six-member associations to 35 alumni associations is a testament to its commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and empowering Alpha Phi Omega alumni associations across North America.
ACNA’s expansion empowers Alpha Phi Omega alumni associations by providing them with a platform for collaboration, support, and advocacy. Through ACNA, member associations gain access to resources, networking opportunities, and collective initiatives that amplify their impact and strengthen their capacity to serve their communities and advance the mission of Alpha Phi Omega.
With 35 member associations, ACNA has significantly expanded its reach and influence across North America. It enhances the organization’s ability to address common challenges, pursue shared goals, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of Alpha Phi Omega members and the communities they serve.
ACNA Conventions thru the Years: The ACNA Convention has evolved into a significant and highly anticipated event within the Alpha Phi Omega community in North America. The Convention provides a platform for alumni associations to foster closer relationships and collaboration. It plays a crucial role in mediating issues and resolving conflicts that may arise between alumni associations.
ACNA Convention has expanded in scope, encompassing a wide range of activities and events beyond the traditional meetings and discussions. These include keynote speeches, workshops, seminars, social events, service projects, and golf tournaments. It also serves as a non-stop celebration of fellowship, bringing together Alpha Phi Omega alumni from various regions to reconnect, share experiences, and strengthen friendships.
Through its evolution and continued success, the Convention remains a beacon of unity and solidarity within the Alpha Phi Omega community in North America.
ACNA Community Services: ACNA’s commitment to humanitarian projects reflects its dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of individuals and communities in need, both locally and internationally.
ACNA demonstrates the organization’s commitment to serving communities in need, particularly in the Philippines by hosting the International Humanitarian Medical Dental Outreach (IHMDO) project. This project provides a range of essential services to impoverished communities, including medical check-ups, dental services, optical exams, circumcisions, grocery and vitamin distribution, as well as a children’s feeding program.
In addition to the IHMDO project, each ACNA presidency undertakes its own fundraising initiatives to support humanitarian efforts. These fundraising projects have raised thousands of dollars, which are used to fund various humanitarian projects, including, “Adopt a Barangay” program, providing relief aid in response to natural disasters, and supporting the medical missions of local alumni associations
in the Philippines.
Through the IHMDO project and other initiatives, ACNA continues to uphold the values of service and compassion that are central to the mission of Alpha Phi Omega.
Relationship with APO-Philippines: The relationship between the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Council of North America (ACNA) and Alpha Phi Omega Philippines (APO- Philippines) has undergone a period of clarification and evolution since ACNA’s establishment. Over time, efforts have been made to clarify the relationship between ACNA and APO-Philippines. Clarifying this relationship is essential for promoting transparency, cooperation, and effective collaboration between ACNA and APO- Philippines.
ACNA has partnered with APO-Philippines in supporting the medical missions of local alumni associations in underserved areas in the Philippines. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to serving communities in need and promoting healthcare access and wellness.
ACNA officers have participated in the APO Philippines Biennial General Assembly. This participation demonstrates ACNA’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with APO-Philippines and staying informed about developments within the global Alpha Phi Omega fraternity.
